About the Session

PMI’s Pulse of the Profession® 2026 highlights how deeply complexity is reshaping delivery work.

• 97% of professionals managed a complex project this year.
• 81% report rising complexity.
• 35% still face complexity without any guiding framework.

The consequences are significant. Nearly one‑third of complex projects miss intended benefits, and complexity steadily weakens alignment, value delivery, and team well‑being. Teams that navigate complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed. PMI’s findings point to an important shift: moving from managing tasks to managing systems.

This session introduces the Cynefin Framework, a sense‑making approach that helps practitioners understand the nature of the problems they face before deciding how to act. Participants will learn the difference between Complicated work, where cause and effect can be analyzed and expertise applies, and Complex work, where patterns only become clear after the fact and outcomes emerge through experimentation rather than upfront prediction.

Attendees will:

• Identify a truly Complex project, including novel interdependencies, shifting stakeholder needs, and the absence of a proven playbook
• Distinguish genuine complexity from work that only appears complex
• Avoid the common mistakes that intensify complexity
